The Moving On to Being FreeTM smoking cessation program is based on more than 20 years of research and development. It is one of the most successful programs available.

Moving On to Being FreeTM is only offered through some hospitals and primary care clinics in Northern Ontario. Visit our map to view all of the participating clinics.

How The Program Works

The process is guided by healthcare providers who help people work through the 5-steps at their own pace. Every session follows the same format. See what is involved with each session.

Step 1: Get Ready to Quit

  • Complete a smoking history questionnaire

Step 2: Move on to Quitting

  • Initial session, approx. 1hr
  • Decisions:
    • Set a quit date?
    • Cut down or quit cold turkey?
    • Medications to help quit?
  • Create a cut down & quit plan
  • Additional sessions 7-10 days apart until within 7-10 days of quit date
  • Monitor progress
  • Increase confidence & strategies

Step 3: Quit Call

Step 4: Prevent Relapse

Receive 7 phone calls (5 - 10 minutes each) to prevent relapse and monitor withdrawal and medication side effects.

  • 2 days after quit day
  • Weekly for 1st month
  • Every 2nd week for 2nd month

Step 5: Being Free

Receive 3 follow up calls (1 - 5 minutes each) scheduled 3, 6, 12 months after quitting. The goals of each call are to monitor:

  • Progress
  • Your need for additional help
  • Evaluate the program
